Benefits of This Crane Humidifier
Humidifiers are an ideal choice for relieving the discomforts of nasal congestion, dry itchy skin, chapped lips, and dry throat. The moisture that humidifiers add to dry air helps alleviate common nuisances brought on by winter heating, such as static electricity, peeling wallpaper, and cracks in paint and furniture. Many physicians recommend the use of a humidifier to help relieve congestion from the common cold and flu as an alternative to over-the-counter cough and cold medicine.

The Drop Shape Cool Mist Humidifier was a finalist in the 2011 International Housewares Design Awards. Thanks to its fun, contemporary design and whisper-quiet operation, it is discreet enough to be left out when company visits.

Straightforward, Whisper-Quiet Operation
Not only are Crane humidifiers stylish, but they are also easy to use and include an auto-shut-off feature that engages when the water tank is empty to ensure safety. The whisper-quiet operation helps provide for a good night sleep for everyone.

Operating the Crane Drop Shape Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifier requires only a few easy steps. Simply remove the water tank from the unit, unscrew the tank cap, and fill the water tank under a water faucet. Securely replace the tank cap, making sure the rubber cap seal is in place, and place the water tank back onto the unit. Place the humidifier on an elevated surface and set it to a medium output setting for comfortable room humidification.

Important Tips
If you have a lot of minerals in your tap water, it is recommended to use distilled water, filtered water, or a Crane demineralization filter (HS-3161). Place humidifier on an elevated surface and not on carpet, towel, or sensitive wood furniture.

Cleaning and Storage
Frequently cleaning your humidifier is very important. Crane recommends emptying the water in the basin daily, making sure you pour away from the fan air-outlet. Disinfect the water basin and tank weekly by using a white vinegar and fresh water solution, let sit for 30 minutes, then rinse. For convenience, the Crane Descaler solution HS-1933 is also available. It is important to disinfect and dry completely before storage.

By Michelle Obama

First tagged by "sunshine-books"
Customer tags: gardening, nutrition, health, victory garden

Review & Description

Through telling the story of the White House Kitchen Garden, First Lady Michelle Obama explores how increased access to healthful, affordable food can promote better eating habits and improve health for families and communities across America.

Mrs. Obama will describe how Sasha and Malia were the catalysts for change for their family's eating behavior which inspired her national initiative to address childhood obesity and resulted in the idea to plant a vegetable garden on the South Lawn, the first since Eleanor Roosevelt's Victory Garden. American Grown will be inspirational and instructive and will provide ideas for readers to get involved and join the movement to create community gardens, support local farmers markets, create school gardens, and start urban gardens, as well as other ways that they can make small changes to achieve big results and create healthy eating habits.

Since entering the White House, Mrs. Obama has emerged as a passionate advocate for healthful eating and exercise.  In February 2010 she launched Let's Move!, a nationwide initiative to address the epidemic of childhood obesity by empowering parents and caregivers with information, improving food quality in schools, increasing access to healthy, affordable food, and encouraging increased physical activity.

American Grown will speak to these issues which Mrs. Obama has strongly advocated for, in particular, making better food choices. It will also include practical ideas, recipes, and resources as well as tips on how to begin a garden of any size, anywhere and how to support local farmers' markets.

Filled with gorgeous full-color photography, American Grown will include stunning photos of the White House garden and Mrs. Obama throughout the seasons, as well as other community and school gardens from around the country. Read more

Herbal (Paperback)

Herbal
Herbal (Paperback)
By Deni Bown

Review & Description

Few areas of contemporary life remain untouched by the beneficial use of herbs. Combining the expertise of well-known herbalist Deni Brown and London's Chelsea Physic Garden, Herbal is a guide to the 150 most important herbs in use today, presented as an A-Z, with the traditional Latin names complemented by the more accessible current or colloquial tags. With a foreword by Sue Minter, curator of the Chelsea Physic Garden (founded in 1673), and packed with essential facts on their cultivation and abundant medicinal, culinary and cosmetic uses, Herbal provides an intimate portrait of the histories and mysteries of each of these 150 herbs. In addition, Deni Bown explores, through sixteen special thematic features, traditional and contemporary uses for an even wider array of herbs grouped together as herbal relaxants, stimulants, aphrodisiacs, colourings, salads, tonics and more. Herbal is rich with images and anecdotes that bring each herb to life. Gloriously illustrated with photographs specially commissioned from the author and with botanical plates, many taken from the Chelsea Physic Garden's own historic herbals, this is a source book for mind, body and soul, as well as a guide for those who would like to cultivate their own herb garden. It will appeal to the expert and to the novice, and to all who appreciate the natural beauty of herbs. Read more

Gardens of the Mind (Hardcover)

Gardens of the Mind
Gardens of the Mind (Hardcover)
By Michael Spens

Review & Description

Born in 1900, Geoffrey Jellicoe's working life spans virtually all the main developments in landscape and garden design of the 20th century; this thoughtful study of his contributions to these disciplines reveals the origins and forms of his genius. Influences on his work have ranged from the writings of ancient Greeks to those of Carl Jung, and from classical art to Jackson Pollock, and these, together with his own particular vision, have given Jellicoe's work an individuality and style that is internationally recognised. While the significance of the worlds of art and ideas concerning the way man handles landscape can never be underestimated, in the work of Geoffrey Jellicoe we can see such interaction heightened to a thought-provoking level where we not only appreciate his work, but also question our own attitudes to our surroundings. The author, himself an architect, records Jellicoe's education at the Architectural Association, and his early days in Italy with fellow architectural student J Read more

Weslandia (Paperback)

Weslandia
Weslandia (Paperback)
By Paul Fleischman

Review & Description

FOR USE IN SCHOOLS AND LIBRARIES ONLY. Wesley's garden produces a crop of huge, strange plants which provide him with clothing, shelter, food, and drink, thus helping him create his own civilization and changing his life. What do the children you know usually do when school is out for the summer? Go crazy with boredom? Head poolside with friends? Plan a self-sufficient civilization with its own staple food crop? That is precisely how Wesley decides to spend his summer vacation. Wesley is not an ordinary boy: "He alone in his town disliked pizza and soda, alarming his mother and the school nurse. He found professional football stupid. He'd refused to shave half his head, the hairstyle worn by all the other boys, despite his father's bribe of five dollars." It all starts (the civilization, that is) when Wesley overturns a plot of ground in his yard to see what new and unknown seeds might blow into it. Curiously, just one kind of plant grows--an unusual, flowering, fruit-bearing plant that tastes of "peach, strawberry, pumpkin pie, and flavors he had no name for." Soon, Wesley is literally reaping the fruits of his labors--using the fruit rind to make a cup for the juice he squeezes, barbecuing the root tubers, and weaving the bark into a hat to keep off the sun.

In Wesley's new world, he no longer needs a watch because he uses a flower stalk as a sundial, dividing the day into 8 segments, one for each of the flower's petals. A new language (based on an 80-letter alphabet) and counting system (based on the number 8) soon follow. Ah, Weslandia. Slowly but surely his once-tormenting classmates become curious. And soon enough, Wesley allows them to help him crush seeds for oil, which "had a tangy scent and served him both as suntan lotion and mosquito repellent." He also invents sports that are less distasteful to him than football--"games rich with strategy and complex scoring systems," and watches patiently as his classmates blunder. Wesley's parents say that he looks happy for the first time in years. And when he returns to school in September? "He had no shortage of friends." Newbery Medal winner and onetime alternate-world creator Paul Fleischman shines in this deadpan-but-hilarious picture book, and illustrator Kevin Hawkes's splendid paintings will delight young readers with the explosion of colorful, comical details. Kids young and old will love the once-outcast hero Wesley and his Robinson Crusoe-style triumphs. (Ages 8 to 11, or for reading aloud to younger children) --Karin Snelson Read more
